Breaking Down the Elements of a Successful Graphic Design

If you want to become a competent graphic designer, the first step is that you should arm yourself with the basics. Mastering the fundamentals is key to a promising future as an illustrator. And among the things you should learn about are the elements of graphic design, understanding the elements allows you to appreciate what it takes to execute excellent projects

7 elements of graphic design

If your goal is to learn ‘how to learn design’, the elements of graphic design are your fundamental tools to make your visions a reality.

Line

Often referred to as the building blocks of design, lines can be used for various purposes. Lines can have different effects and impact your overall project. You can use lines to stress phrases or words, create patterns, connect content, and more. Most of the time, this element of graphic design is used to create division or direct a viewer in a particular direction.

Shape

Also known as forms, this is one of the most important elements of graphic design. Shapes are the formation of figures using lines. The three basic shapes used in graphic design are geometric, abstract, and organic. This element is the root of graphic designing and can have symbolic meaning and invoke feelings. When used carefully, the shapes you use can create a very eye-pleasing design.

Color

Color is among the elements of graphic design that can dramatically alter one’s perception of the project. Color can have a powerful impact at first glance. This element creates a mood within the piece and has the power to tell a story. Every color has something different to say, and the strategic combination of colors can have a substantial effect on the overall design.

Texture

It can be considered a counterpart of color in the elements of graphic design. When a single shade of color is used as a backdrop or to highlight the image, that is texture. Texture has a unique design and pattern and can make a stark difference in the project. Texture styles include paper, concrete, brick, and other natural elements. While this element may be subtler than other elements of graphic design, it can offer a different visual impact.

Size

When it comes to graphic design, size does matter. The size of a project emphasizes the significance of the structure. The bigger the size is, the more significant the data is. Size is instrumental in attracting attention to a particular subject within the project. It can also create contrast within the piece, making it more dynamic and interesting.

Space

As a graphic designer, you should think about positive space (the focus of the design) and negative space (the background) while creating your project. Space is essential in drawing the viewer’s attention toward something in particular. The proper utilization of space allows you to maximize your layout and leave a lasting impression.

Value

Value refers to how light or dark an area is in your overall project. This can be the blackest of black to the brightest of whites. When used strategically, value can create depth, emphasis, and contrast. This element can alter people’s perceptions when utilized well.
