The Science, Technology, and Society (STS) subject at CIIT College of Arts and Technology recently conducted a field trip to Masungi Georeserve in Rizal. The trip served as a crucial component of the module on environmental sustainability.
The diverse ecosystems at Masungi provided a unique learning environment for the 37 participating students, most of whom were second-year students. Beyond its scenic landscapes, Masungi serves as a testament to successful conservation efforts. The revitalized mountain area showcases the positive impact of community-driven protection and redevelopment initiatives.
The primary objective of the field trip, spearheaded by faculty members Mr. Michael Pajanil, Mr. Patrick Pineda, and Ms. Thea Garing, along with nurses Ms. Javi Gavarra and Ms. Anabelle Paulige, was to expose students to the prevailing environmental challenges faced by the Philippines. These issues include environmental degradation caused by unsustainable corporate practices, climate change, and illegal human activities.
Experiential Learning in Action
The field trip embraced the concept of experiential learning, allowing students to gain firsthand knowledge and appreciation for the environment. Instead of solely relying on textbook information and classroom lectures, the trip immersed students in the natural world. Students actively hiked trails, climbed nets, and explored various ecological zones within the reserve. This active engagement fostered a deeper connection with nature and a stronger understanding of the importance of environmental sustainability.
Adventures at Ungib ni Ruben
One of the trip’s highlights included exploring “Ungib ni Ruben” (Ruben’s Cave), named after the park ranger who discovered it. The cave provided a microcosm of biodiversity, housing a thriving bat colony and a variety of unique species. Students encountered snails the size of a grain of sand and fascinating plants that released an essential oil-like fragrance when torn.
Impact on Student Learning and Environmental Awareness
Michael Pajanil, one of the faculty members on the trip, commented on the lasting impact on the students. He stated that the students will develop a greater appreciation for nature and see firsthand how development can come at a cost, potentially impacting clean air, stunning views, and crucial ecosystems. The immersive experience is a powerful reminder of the need for respect towards nature.
Supporting Conservation Efforts
The trip also shed light on the ongoing fight to protect Masungi Georeserve. Students learned about a signature campaign aimed at safeguarding the area from development plans proposed by private corporations. The petition will be submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Office of the President.
