Cleaning out the junk files on your PC is something you should do on a regular basis. Microsoft has included a file cleaning utility in Windows, and it’s called Disk Cleanup. Running Disk Cleanup will often make your system a little snappier and you can also free up a large amount of used disk space.

You can find the Disk Cleanup utility in the following locations:

WinXP: Start > Program Files > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

Vista/Win7: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

Source: freepik.com

If you occasionally clean out your unwanted system files using Windows “Disk Cleanup”, you may have seen that the Disk Cleanup utility takes a long time scanning for “Compressed Folders”. I have seen this many times and it makes me impatient every time.

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine at work (Bill M), told me that there’s a registry hack to make Cleanup skip the long wait. He was right, I found it using a simple Google search.

Here’s the registry hack (works in XP, so far – have not seen this work in Vista and Win7):

WinXP: Open up the registry editor by clicking the Start Button, then choose Run, type in “regedit” and press the OK button.

Vista/Win7: Hit the Start button and type regeditin the quick search.

Ubuntu 11.10 is going to come with a backup tool – Deja Dup – by default. Using Deja Dup is not difficult. In this article, I will explain how you can use Deja Dup to back up the files in your Ubuntu machine.

Installation

Source: linux.com

Before we get to how to use it, here is how to install Deja Dup in Ubuntu. Deja Dup is in the Ubuntu main repository. So to install it, open the Terminal and execute the command,

$ sudo apt-get install deja-dup

After the installation, you can find Deja Dup using the Dash in Ubuntu 11.04. If you are using an earlier version of Ubuntu or the Classic Desktop in Ubuntu 11.04, you will find Deja Dup under Applications > System Tools.

Backing up files

Source: addictivetips.com

Before you start using Deja Dup, you need to set it up first. Run the application Deja Dup Backup Preferences. Under the tab, Storage, you have to specify the backup location. Deja Dup supports backup to local folder, Amazon S3, Rackspace Cloud, FTP, SSH, WebDAV and Windows Share. Pick the backup location – most of the users will backup to local folder. For added security, it is recommended that you check the box next to Encrypt backup files.

If you pick Local Folder, select the folder where you want to store the backups. It is recommended that you select a folder on a different hard disk from the one you are taking the the backup. Also note that the backup files might require a large memory. So, make sure there is enough space available in the backup folder.

Now that we have set up the backup location, we need to select the folders we want to back up of. To do that, click on the next tab, Files. There are two fields – Include files in folders and Except files in folder. In the first field, you can select the folders of which you want to take back up of. Deja Dup will take backups of all the files inside the folder and those in the sub folders. The second field can be used to exclude sub-folders inside the folders included in the first field from being backed up.

The next step is to decide if you want to do either a manual backup or an automatic backup. Choosing automatic backup means that you have to schedule the backup and select how long Deja Dup holds on to the backup files. For those details and how to restore the files, read the second part of this coming up soon.

There are many times when you come across interesting music and may want to download the song and add it to your mobile phone. The process of uploading the file can get quite tedious if you do not have your data cable handy or the computer you are browsing on does not support Bluetooth or other file transfer technologies.

If you are a Firefox user, you can now easily send any mp3 file to your mobile phone with just the click of a button with the Load2Mobile add-on.

Once you have installed the Load2Mobile add-on you will see a small icon next to any supported music file that you can send to your cellphone.

Once you click on the icon, a new inline window will popup giving you the option to send the file to your cellphone, enter your phone number and click on the Send button.

Source:tmsoft.com

You should receive a SMS message shortly with the link to the MP3 file, which you can then listen and download to your phone. You can also signup for the service and store the songs in your online locker. The service also optimizes the MP3 file to perform better on the cellphone.

In addition to the Firefox add-on you can also directly upload the files to your cellphone from your desktop using the Load2Mobile service.

Load2Mobile Features

  • Use MP3 files from your desktop, music locker or any web site.
  • No cables required – completely wireless.
  • Songs are optimized for the best sound and smallest size to maximize space on your phone.

Note: SMS charges may be applicable as per your carrier. Additional download charges may apply for downloading the music file to your phone.

Load2Mobile is a experimental add-on, so you will register and login before you can download the add-on.

How To Open .db Files? https://techie-buzz.com/open-db-files/ Mon, 29 Aug 2022 09:28:10 +0000 https://techie-buzz.com/?p=42 Recently one of my friends downloaded an app and found out that it contained a file with a .db extension. ... Read more

Recently one of my friends downloaded an app and found out that it contained a file with a .db extension. She did not know how to open the file and asked my help. Since I have dealt with .db files previously, I was able to quickly point out to her how to open a .db file.

The .db file could also be a Windows thumbnail cache file which stores thumbnail images for Windows Explorer’s thumbnail view. The Windows thumbnail cache file will always have a name called thumbs.db.

Additionally, .db files are database files created in the popular lightweight database SQLite. The .db files can be created by several applications including Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera and other apps to store information. To open files with .db extensions which are not named thumbs.db, you will need to download the SQLite Database Browser.

img source: ecsoft2.org

The SQLite Database Browser can be downloaded from http://sqlitebrowser.org/. Once you download and extract the software, double-click on the executable name SQLite Database Browser. After that follow the steps given below.

Step 1: Click on File -> Open and select the .db file you want to open.

Step 2: If the file is a proper SQLite Database, you will be able to view the database tables and structure in the SQLite Database Browser as shown above.

img source: kieferconsulting.com

Sometimes when you open a .db file, you might see an error saying that the file is not an SQLite Database. In those cases, you can try and open the file in a text editor to view it’s contents. If you are running windows, you can also try to open the file with Microsoft Access. Remember that thumbs.db is not a database file and cannot be opened using the above software.

In the future, you can use a software called OpenWith to Identify and open unknown file extensions.

In the past, we have also covered several ways to open other unknown extensions like how to open RM file, how to open RMVB files, how open ISO files, how to open Torrent files, how to open VOB files, how open AMR files, how to open RAR files, how to open NFO files, how to open PLS files, how to open data files, how to open DAT files, how to open WBMP files and many more how to open file tutorials.

So you heard about Magnet Links and were terrified? What Are Magnet Links? How Are They Different From Torrents? How to Download files using Magnet Links. Are Magnet Links Safe?

In a world of peer-to-peer sharing, Torrents have come along a long way along. However, Torrents are being deemed less safe these days because of people being able to easily track them. This has led several websites including “The Pirate Bay” from changing the way they allow users to download files.

The Pirate Bay recently switched from torrents to magnet links marking a big change in how it operates. In a nutshell, magnet links change how users download content. We’ll take a look at what has changed and what you will need to change in order to download files using Magnet links.

What are Magnet Links? What’s the Difference Between Magnet Links and Torrents?

img source: 10scopes.com

Magnet Links change the fundamental way in which we download from peer-to-peer networks. Unlike Torrents, which needed a centralized server for tracking purposes, magnet links directly download content from other peers thus getting rid of the centralized server for tracking seeds and peers.

Magnet links make use of DHT, which is a form of decentralized distribution which allows a group of users to share a file faster amongst themselves without having to rely on a server. There is not much difference between how a file is downloaded from a torrent vs how it is downloaded from a magnet link.

Do I Have to Change How I Download Using Magnet Links?

No. Magnet links are similar to torrent files and if you have P2P torrent software installed, you will be able to download the content using magnet links without having to change anything. However, you might have to upgrade your P2P software to the latest versions so that the browsers are aware that they should handle those links.

How to Download Files Using Magnet Links?

img source: maketecheasier.com

There are a couple of ways in which you can download content using magnet links. The first is pretty straightforward. Just click on the link that is provided and it will launch your default torrent software as shown below. You might want to check the checkbox next to “Remember my choice for all links of this type” or “Always use this software to open such links” so that it will automatically open magnet links in your favorite torrent client.

Clicking on the “Get This Torrent” link in Pirate Bay will automatically launch your Bittorrent application.

Once you open the magnet link, your torrent client will start downloading the content just like a regular torrent. Alternatively, you can also copy the magnet link and add it directly to your torrent client just like you used to do for regular torrents.

Are Magnet Links Safe?

Downloading through magnet links is as safe as downloading a torrent file. However, make sure to download legitimate content and you will be safe. There have been several cases of infected torrents so the files you download through magnet links could be unsafe as well.
