It was in late January that we reported about the original Motorola Droid Android 2.2.2 update is under testing from Motorola. Today, Droid-Life is reporting that Motorola and Verizon are done with all their tests, and will be releasing the OTA update to Droid owners today itself.

The FRG83G OTA update will update the Droid Android OS version to 2.2.2. The Android 2.2.2 was released by Google so as to fix the famous ‘SMS’ bug.

Here is the official change-log from the big Red itself:

* Sporadic issues with unintended recipient list corrected for text, audio, picture, video and audio multimedia messages.

* Correct message populates when messaging application is quickly opened and accessed.

It is more or less certain that the Droid won’t get the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update. However, it is nice to see Motorola still releasing minor Android OS update a handset which is more than a year old now.

The Droid is the first handset in the market to get the Android 2.2.2 update, excluding the Nexus One. Other manufactures should learn from Motorola and release the Android 2.2.2 update for all their Android handsets.

The FRG83G update for the Droid weighs in at 3.4MB, and will be pushed to all Droid handsets beginning from today.

Google Android is the next buzzword in the Mobile world. Everyone from developers to users to cellphone manufacturers are focusing more and more on the Android platform. This has made Android an important platform for rapid development and has made many porting over from other platforms to Android.

The latest and the most intriguing in this list is the .NET framework. In a recent blog post, Miguel De Icaza has written that work has just begun to port the Mono implementation of Microsoft’s c#.NET into Android. Mono has been ported successfully to the iPhone environment and the Android version should be expected by August this year. The version for Android is codenamed MonoDroid while the one for iPhone goes as MonoTouch. MonoTouch is available for the iPad as well.

Miguel says,

Our vision is to allow developers to reuse their engine and business logic code across all mobile platforms and swapping out the user interface code for a platform-specific API. MonoTouch for iPhone devices and the Monodroid APIs for Android devices.

Miguel De Icaza, the leader of this project hopes to show a preview of this technology at the Mix1o. The project can be compiled on ARM as well just like on Android or iPhone. This year will see more conversions and heat in the Mono world.

Last time around we told you on how to open CBR, CBZ, CB7, CBT or CBA files on Windows and Mac. However, what if you want to open in on your Android device? Well, worry not, because there are several apps out there which will allow you to open CBZ, CBR and CB7 files on your Android mobile and tablet.

The files with these extensions are basically comic book archives which contain images in sequence and can be read using a compatible software. In fact, you can actually create your own CBR, CBZ, CB7, CBT or CBA files as well.

Source: softpedia.com

If you want to read these comic book archives on an Android phone or tablet, you will require a dedicated app. One of the best app to view comic books on Android is “A Comic Viewer“. The app is a lightweight comic, image and manga viewer which can open cbr, cbz and cb7 comic book archives.

Additionally, you can also use another app called Comik Reader to open those files on an Android device. So go ahead and live that kid in yourself by reading those comics on your device.

Just like iOS which introduced folders in iOS4, Android too allows users to create folders to store multiple items in it. Adding a folder is pretty easy but Android does not provide an easy option to rename the folder to something more remember able.

Whenever you create or add a new folder to any Android home screen, the name remains “New folder” which is not very helpful when you add multiple folders to the same screen.

Source: makeuseof.com

So how do you rename folders in Android? Well, it is actually pretty easy. When you add a “New folder” to a Android screen, open the folder and then long press (press and hold) the folder’s title bar where the name appears (initially “new folder”). When you do that, a dialog box “Rename folder” will appear, allowing you to enter a new name for the folder.

Enter the name of the folder in the dialog box and click on the “OK” button and your folder will be renamed. You can use the same steps to rename the folder to something else as well.

Just make sure to open the folder first so that it’s contents are visible. If you long press on the folder itself, you will be shown an option to remove it and not to change the folder name of the Android folder.

Last night at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference – Andy Rubin announced that Google will soon be releasing Google Maps 5. The updated version of Google Maps will bring with it many goodies like dynamic map drawing, many multi-touch gestures like using two fingers to tilt and rotate and offline caching.

The update will also improve the performance of Google Maps and will make it much smoother and snappier.

However, not all Android handsets will be able to enjoy all the features which Google Maps 5 will bring with it. Only a few selected high-end Android devices will be able to take advantage of all the features which Google Maps 5 will offer.

The list of devices includes :

  •  Galaxy S
  •  Droid
  •  Droid X
  •  Droid 2
  •  Droid Incredible
  •  Evo
  •  Nexus S
  •  G2

The Nexus One won’t be able to make use of the new multi-touch gestures in Google Maps 5 because it lacks the required multi-touch capability. The update is expected to be rolled out in the coming days.

Android apps are getting better as each day passes and the ones provided by Google is the top of the charts. Google Maps with rotate, tilt and 3D was a revolutionary concept and this time too, we have more awesomeness from Google as the Google Translate app that does live conversation.

Source: medium.com

The moment you speak in a language, Google translate listens to it and translates it in live to another language. The same is true for your friend who speaks a language you have no idea of. This new feature is available in a “Conversation Mode” that autodetects the language and does this conversion in live. This has been tested in English and Spanish currently as these are the two most popular languages used on the Internet and text translate service for these languages already exist.

The Google Blogspot has written about this service saying,

In conversation mode, simply press the microphone for your language and start speaking. Google Translate will translate your speech and read the translation out loud. Your conversation partner can then respond in their language, and you’ll hear the translation spoken back to you.
