CIIT 3D Printers

What’s Up Kamuning: 3D Printers Have Now Arrived at CIIT!

In our pursuit to be the leading institution bringing modern education to the young generation of Filipinos, CIIT brought one of the latest innovations in 3D Technology to our school – 3D Printers. That’s right, 3D Printers are now available at the Interweave Building.

3D Printing or additive manufacturing is a technology that produces three-dimensional objects from a digital blueprint. Designs are created using 3D software such as Blender, 3D Max, Maya, and other similar programs. Additive Manufacturing works by printing materials layer by layer to create objects. Since the technology’s inception around the 1980s, 3D printing technology became influential in the area of aviation, engineering, architecture, health, films and many more. In fact, ‘Stranger Things’ used this technology to create the monster, Demogorgon, by bringing it to life before haunting the viewers with its strange appearance on-screen.

The Arrival of 3D Printers in CIIT

Last July 26, 3 units of FORM2 3D Printers finally arrived in school after months of anticipation for this new technology to arrive and be added to the roster of the school’s state-of-the-art equipment. On the day of its arrival, faculty members from the School of the Arts convened to be introduced to this printing technology and get themselves acquainted with the process of using it. The printers also came with 1 Form Wash unit, which is an automated washing system for finished prints.

The School of the Arts formally launched the 3D Printing Technology to CIIT Students on September 24. The introduction and discussion were led by 3D Instructor, Harold Cabansag, who also gave a demonstration of the printing process. Students were enthralled to finally get a glimpse of the newest state-of-the-art technology of the school. Some even get to experience using the 3D Printer during the live demonstration.

What 3D Printing Can Do for the Students of our School

  1. See your 3D art in real form. Finishing a 3D Model is already an achievement, yet how much more if you can view them in tangible form? Getting a chance to have a closer look at a 3D design gives us an advantage to further improve the works we produce.
  2. Create prototypes. Learning 3D printing to create a prototype for ideas can help young innovators produce and test their designs quickly without much trouble and effort.
  3. Get ahead of the trend. An early introduction to this new technology will give you an opportunity to have the upper hand in any 3D initiative of your company. Since the practice is a fast and growing trend in our country, the expertise of using the 3D Printer will get you to the top of your game.

In the Philippines, the inclusion of 3D Printing in the curriculum is still an unusual practice in schools. Unlike in western countries where 3D Printing had been made a standard part of the school curriculum, from grade school to the tertiary level. The adaptation of this growing trend was done to prepare our students to be industry-ready in this day and age of technological revolution.
