Twitter does not allow users to send direct messages to people who do not follow you, though that may act as a deterrent to stop spamming, direct messages are much more better than sending a message via a reply.

Tech Spikes has a nice hack that will allow you to send a direct message to people who do not follow you in twitter.

To send a DM to a non-follower in Twitter, you have to derive their DM URL to create a DM message. Here’s the syntax

http://twitter.com/direct_messages/create/twitterusername

Replace the twitter user name with the twitter id of the person to whom you wish to send the DM and you can send a direct message to a user without them following you.

Twitter recently launched a new feature called “Who to Follow” where they display a list of suggestions of people you should be following on Twitter based on certain algorithms. Though this feature could be handy once in a while, it is always in your face whenever you visit the twitter web interface.

Now the problem here is that Twitter does not provide users with an option to disable the suggestions list, and you will have to either use a browser extension or Greasemonkey script to disable the “Who to follow” suggestions box on the Twitter web interface.

Google Chrome users have a choice with two different extensions which will allow you to disable/hide or move the “Who To Follow” suggestions box. The Hide Twitter suggestions extension completely removes the suggestions box, whereas the Hide Twitter suggestions PLUS extension will move the box to the bottom of the sidebar so that it is not in your face every time.

If you are a Firefox, Opera or Internet Explorer you can use a user style to hide the “Who to Follow” suggestions box in Twitter. To do that, open this link in the browser you are using and choose the options provided to you. If you are using Firefox or Internet Explorer you might need to install additional software or add-ons for your respective browser in order to use the User Style.

That’s it, till Twitter provides a way to disable the “Who To Follow” suggestions, you could use this trick to hide it from your web interface.

Replies in twitter are usually messages that include a @username text in a tweet, however by default users can view replies to themselves and in some cases replies to someone else sent by someone in your follower list.

But how do you track replies that are sent out to a person other than you? Well there is very simple way to do that.

For example if you want to track the reply sent to my account @keithdsouza or our friendly RSS feed robot @techiebuzzer here are some simple steps.

Step 1: Go to http://search.twitter.com.

Step 2: In the search box just enter @username, in our example either @keithdsouza or @techiebuzzer.

Step 3: Once you hit the search button, you will see all the replies sent to the user you are searching for.

Pretty simple right.

Groups or Lists have always been a good way to organize your contacts. In that sense Twitter Lists are no different. However, with Twitter lists, you cannot control whether you are on a good list or a rant list.

Say for example, you had a bad day with one of your Twitter friends and they in turn decide to add you to a list called Moronsor something like that. Officially, there is no way for you to get out of that list, however, thanks to TechicaVita, there might be a way to get yourself out of that list.

As you can see from the tweet above: If you block a user and then unblock them, you will not show up on their list anymore. So, if you have been wanting to get out of someone’s twitter list, try out the trick above. Do let us know if it works for you or not.

Twitter provides users with an option to send direct messages which can only be read by the person you are sending the message to, however, if you receive a lot of DMs, it definitely becomes difficult to find old messages from users.

The problem is that Twitter does not provide users with an option to search for direct messages. This might become painful when you want to look at a message which was sent to you a few weeks or months back. However, you can easily archive and search all your direct messages using a neat trick.

The trick involves making sure that Twitter sends all your direct messages to you as an email to an email address by selecting the checkbox under “Settings -> Notices” and using your email service to search for the direct messages.

For example, I use a Gmail email address for Twitter, whenever someone direct messages me, I receive and email. Now to search for the direct message, I simply use the wild card text “twitter-dm*” as the “From” email (this remains constant) and type in the words I am searching for in the “Has the words” text box.

You could use the same trick with any other email service which provides you with a search option and uses the wildcard search as I did with Gmail above provided that your email service supports wildcard characters. If your email service does not provide you with a wildcard search, you can open a direct message and copy the email address (which is similar to all DM emails) and use it to search your direct messages from Twitter.
