Update: This article might be outdated, please check the bottom of the post for new updates on installing themes and extensions in Google Chrome.

Google Chrome was released only yesterday and there are several tips and tricks already making the rounds including our own Ultimate list of tips and tricks for Google Chrome. The good thing about the Internet is that you can find interesting things quickly.

One such thing we came across was changing the default theme for Google Chrome, though this is not available as a option it can be easily done by following these steps. Google has its own Theme Free Chrome Themes website, but it is not live yet.

To change the theme for Google Chrome you will need to replace the default.dll file with the new theme file. Location for theme folder are as follows:

For Vista Users: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\0.2.149.27\Themes\

For XP Users: C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\0.2.149.27\Themes\

Replace C with your Windows directory, UserName with the user name you have installed chromed with, the number is the version for Google Chrome.

Make sure to keep a backup of the default.dll, before you overwrite it with a new one. DeviantArt already has a Picthblack theme which you can use to replace the default Google Chrome theme.

If you have just migrated to Chrome from Firefox, you may have noticed that there is no Chrome version of NoScript the popular Firefox add-on to block JavaScript on web pages. NoScript blocks JavaScript, Java, Flash, Silverlight and several other executable contents by default and gives users a choice to allow these content from trusted sources only. Hence, it makes browsing faster and safer. I can’t imagine web browsing without NoScript, and this is one of the many reasons to stick with Firefox.

If you miss NoScript in Chrome, I have good news for you: Google Chrome will have similar content filter options soon. The latest Dev channel v5.0.317.0 for Windows has an option to selectively control cookies, images, JavaScript, plug-ins and pop-ups. Users can either block this content or opt to allow only certain trusted sources.

If you are using Dev channel of Chrome on Windows, you can access these features by updating it to latest release. Move to Options->Under the Hood->Content settings. This setting window provides better management of images, JavaScript, plug-ins, and pop-ups.

The recommended option is to block all JavaScript and add trusted hosts as Exceptions. Although, blocking JavaScript may result into unusual rendering of web pages. You can set options for cookies, images, popups and plug-ins similarly.

You can also control your content settings from the address bar. If there is any blocked item on the current web page, a small icon will appear in the address bar, and users can manage settings by clicking on it. This feature is similar to NoScript, where you can control settings from the status bar icon.

I hope to see this feature in stable version of Chrome soon. 🙂

The folks at Google and in-fact lots of other major companies have a knack for hiding Easter eggs within their products. We have covered several such Easter Eggs in the past.

However, we can across another Easter Egg in Google Chrome where users can teleport goats from the Task Manager. This is basically available on version 4.0.266.0 of the Linux version of Chrome.

I was unable to confirm this on a Windows 7 machine, however here are some screenshots from a Linux version of Google Chrome.

To experience the Easter egg, follow the steps given below.

Source: youtube.com
  1. Open Google Chrome and a few tabs
  2. Press Shift+Esc to open the task manager
  3. Right click on any process and click on “Goats Teleported”
  4. Restart the browser and open the task manager again to see the number of Goats teleported for each tab.

This currently only works on Google Chrome for Linux, we are waiting to see if this Easter egg makes its way to Windows and Mac versions. Looks like Google was in a hurry to teleport the goats to the penguins first 🙂
