With the growing size of USB drives, it has become more and more easier to carry software’s on a Flash drive and use it anywhere, this includes basic software’s to entire office suites and web browsers.

If you are a Opera lover, you don’t have to limit yourself to using Opera to only on the computers they are installed on, and can use opera anywhere with the help the Portable Opera, the mobile Opera version you can add to your USB drive.

Portable Opera works just like the regular Opera software, just that it writes the settings to a file instead of the registry. It has the same features as a normal desktop version, surf the web, write emails, use IRC while having your contacts, bookmarks and settings with you – anytime and everywhere.

To install and use Portable Opera, extract the file directly to your USB device or Hard disk.

Portable Opera is not created by Opera themselves, however the developer of the software has the authorization of Opera to distribute the software to users.

Opera 10.5 Pre-Alpha Is Here and It Is Fast! https://techie-buzz.com/opera-10-5-pre-alpha/ Tue, 18 Oct 2022 08:32:01 +0000 https://techie-buzz.com/?p=2869 The wait for Opera fans is over. Opera Software has officially released Opera 10.5 Pre-Alpha. Couple of days back, an ... Read more

The wait for Opera fans is over. Opera Software has officially released Opera 10.5 Pre-Alpha. Couple of days back, an internal build of Opera 10.5 had been leaked. However, the official pre-alpha is a lot more stable and contains a few extra goodies. The big new features in Opera 10.5 are:

Carakan: The speed race just got a lot more interesting. Opera 10.5 introduces the much anticipated Carakan – Opera’s new JavaScript rendering engine. We did a quick test using the V8 Benchmark. This is what we found:

Opera 10.5 blew away Firefox and outperformed Safari by a fair margin, but Google Chrome still reigned supreme.

HTML5: Opera 10.5 uses an updated rendering engine( Presto 2.5.18). Presto 2.5 introduces a number of new features including support for CSS3 Transitions and HTML5 features like persistent storage.

Vega: Vega is Opera’s graphics library and was previously used only to render SVG. However, in Opera 10.5 all graphics is Opera is rendered using Vega. For now Vega is a highly optimized software rendering engine, but this move definitely does open up the possibility of using hardware acceleration in the future.

Better Platform Integration: As mentioned earlier, Opera 10.5 includes better Windows 7 integration including support for taskbar thumbnails and jump lists. However, there is good news for Mac users also. Opera has finally decided to utilise the Cocoa framework, as a result of which Opera now looks and feels like a native Mac app.

Private Browsing: Opera 10.5 not only introduces Private Browsing but also puts its own spin on it. Unlike in other browsers, you don’t need to open a separate window to enter private browsing mode. Opera supports per-tab private browsing. Whenever you use a private tab, Opera will not keep a record of pages opened in that tab.

Non-modal Dialogue Boxes: Dialogue boxes are no longer in your face. Instead they are displayed as page overlays.

Various UI Improvements: There are minor UI improvements all around. The cache viewer and find have been drastically improved while the address field and search field have been retouched.

Opera 10.5 is available for Windows and Mac users. There are some known issues including high memory usage. This build has major performance issues on older computers and it not recommended unless your processor supports SSE2. And finally, there is no UNIX build this time around.

Update: I went ahead and carried out a few more tests. Opera managed to beat Chrome in both Peacekeeper and Sunspider. So, it appears that Opera is now the fastest browser available.

Opera Mini is the most popular browser for mobile phones and smartphones and has been making navigation on phones much more easier with tabbed browsing and touchscreen navigation. Now what if you want to test out Opera Mini, but can’t install it on your phone because it is not supported?

Well, thanks to a Mobile emulator, you can now run and test the Opera Mini browser on your desktop including Windows, Linux and Mac because it is based on Java and will run on any system which supports Java. Here are the instructions on how you can run Opera Mini on your PC, courtesy My Opera and Kabatology.

Step 1: Download and extract the Micro Emulator to your PC.

Step 2: Download the Opera Mini (.jar and .jad) files to your PC from http://www.operamini.com.

Step 3: Navigate to the folder where you extracted the Micro Emulator and double-click on microemulator.jar. A new application should open up as seen in the screenshot above

Step 4: Now go to “Options -> Select Devices” and select Resizable devices from the available options and click on the “Set as default” button, finally click on the Ok button.

Step 5: Now click on the “Resize” button and set your preferred size.

Step 6: Now click on “File -> Open MIDlet File” and select the Opera Mini .jad file you downloaded earlier, once the file is loaded just click Start and you can start experiencing Opera mini on your desktop.

You can also use the emulator to run other J2ME apps on your desktop PC. Enjoy!!

A large number of browser exploits take advantage of JavaScript and third-party plugins like Java and Flash. NoScript is a popular multi-award winning Firefox add-on that blocks all such scripts and plugins, and allows you to intelligently and selectively execute them only on trusted websites.

I have always felt that using NoScript borders on the verge of paranoia, since it hinders normal web browsing experience. However, a lot of people obviously don’t mind this, since NoScript can protect users against scary click-jacking exploits, XSS vulnerabilities and even zero-day exploits that haven’t been discovered yet. Many Opera and Chrome users have been requesting similar functionality for a long time. However, most NoScript implementations for the aforementioned browsers have been limited due to the rigid nature of their APIs. Fortunately, Eric Wong has found an ingenious way of make NoScript work within the framework of Opera and Chrome’s extension library.

NotScripts is a NoScript inspired extension for Opera and Chrome, that utilizes storage quota allocated to HTML5 applications and UserJS files to offer many of the functionalities present in NoScript. It supports both whitelist (everything is blocked, unless explicitly allowed) and blacklist (everything is allowed, unless explicitly blocked) approaches, and allows you to block scripts either temporarily or permanently.

NotScripts is still not perfect, and as mentioned earlier, taking a whitelist approach might create usability problems. Nevertheless, NotScripts is the best implementation of NoScript I have seen for either browser.
