Nowadays, having the know-how about digital art has become an imperative for younger artists, especially those who are still looking to build a career in the arts and design track.
Produced using software and digital devices, digital art can be a more practical medium compared to its traditional counterparts that remain dependent on tangible materials and supplies that may take more effort, time, and money to prepare.
Art has never been bound to a single medium, but with the modern-day reliance on technology, it has managed to expound through digital means as well. Several types of digital art exist, and as tech continues to evolve, so will digital art. Here we discuss five notable trends in digital arts and design, both current and emerging.
Fractal Art
Fractal art is one of the earliest digital art types there is, yet it has maintained its popularity.
This type of digital art produces detailed patterns through the use of mathematical equations and algorithms such as the Fibonacci Sequence. Artists are able to produce such art with the aid of fractal-generating software.
It serves as an important facet of digital artistry as it represents one of the earliest forms of artificial intelligence. By inputting some algorithms and specifications into code, artists realize they could teach a computer how to create stunning artwork in a fraction of the time.
Data-Moshing
Through data-moshing, artists manipulate media files to create the images or effects they want when they decode the file. Depending on the decoded file, it gives access to other media file snippets and allows editing of the existing files.
It is more commonly used in videos compared to images. The reason is that decoded videos have more room for manipulation than images that have limited space.
However, Google’s Deep Dream tool allows artists to do data-moshing in still images. For example, overlaid files that have mouths or eyeballs are both amazing and horrifying. Though developed in the early 2000s, this tool makes data-moshing an emerging form of digital art.
Digital Collage
While they share similarities, a digital collage is quite distinct from a standard collage particularly with the process it is created.
Rather than simply cutting out images and designs and putting them together on a canvas, digital artists are able to play with a variety of textures by manipulating the individual photos they use. Because of this, digital collages not only vary in style, but also in depth and tone.
An increasingly popular type of digital art, digital collage can also be seen used in marketing paraphernalia of brands.
Integrated Art/Mixed Media
Integrated art or mixed media simply means the merging of two or more media in a single piece, often marrying elements of traditional and digital art—painting and photography, for example. This is often done with editing software and rendered as digital assets.
The appeal of integrated art is that it allows people in the field of digital arts and design to experiment and push their boundaries.
Emerging trends surrounding integrated art include its expanded application on mediums such as virtual reality.
NFT Art
Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without at least mentioning NFTs. The controversial digital concept has been making waves since it first came to light, especially in the art world.
An NFT, or a nonfungible token, is essentially defined as a digital asset that exists completely in the digital universe. This means that, while you cannot physically touch an object, you can have sole ownership of it.
According to 99designs, NFT art has a myriad of benefits for artists. Firstly, NFTs make ownership of digital art easier to process as Blockchain tokenizes minted digital art.
This innovation also allows artists to generate income in a novel way, with NFT serving as an easier means to monetize and market their work. Artists are also able to reach a global audience.
