Senior High School Tracks: Tips on Choosing the One That Best Fits You https://www.ciit.edu.ph/senior-high-school-track/ https://www.ciit.edu.ph/senior-high-school-track/#respond Fri, 22 Dec 2023 23:15:00 +0000 http://www.staging2.ciit.edu.ph/?post_type=blog&p=4233 With the continuous developments in education, many students in all levels are faced with a multitude of choices when it comes to shaping their academic journey, particularly in the Philippines. One pivotal crossroad in this path is the senior high school track, a crucial phase that sets the stage for future endeavors.

Implemented in 2012 by the Department of Education (DepEd), students in the Philippines must now undergo two divisions in high school for them to obtain a full-fledged diploma: the junior and senior high programs. So, to keep up with the K-12 mandate of DepEd, different schools now offer junior (Grades 7-10) and senior high (Grades 11-12). On the other hand, Grade 10 finishers earn a certification by the end of the program but aren’t technically considered graduates unless they take up and pass the senior high school track courses.

As you stand at the point of your academic career, the decision of choosing the right senior high school track awaits you. In this era of diverse career opportunities and rapidly changing industries, selecting a track that aligns with your passions and goals is more important than ever. This article discusses the senior high school experience, shedding light on its significance, the diverse tracks available, and the impact it can have on your academic and professional trajectory. We’ll also share with you tips on how to choose the track that best suits you. Read on!

What are the Senior High School Tracks (and Strands)?

As mentioned, the senior high school program in the country is a critical phase of the K-12 education system. It offers students an opportunity to specialize in specific academic or technical-vocational fields. Under the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, senior high school students must choose among four tracks, each catering to different interests and career paths. Let’s take a closer look at these tracks and strands:

1. Academic Track

This track appeals to those who have set their minds toward college education. Divided into degree-specific courses, the academic track in senior high school aims to prepare students to more advanced university courses.

Under this umbrella are four strands, such as General Academic (GA); Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMMS); Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); and Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM),

2. Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track

This track calls out to eligible students with subjects focused on job-ready skills. In addition, it offers practical knowledge with matching certificates to help students land their desired job after they graduate from senior high school.

Strands under the tech-voc track are Agri-Fishery Arts, Home Economics, Industrial Arts, and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

3. Sports Track

Designed to equip senior high students with sports-related and physical fitness and safety knowledge, sports track is a popular choice for those who wish to venture into athletics, fitness, and recreational industries. Furthermore, this track emphasizes sports science, coaching, and athletic development.

4. Arts and Design Track

In this track, students with a penchant for the arts can enroll in subjects that will hone their skills in visual design and performing arts. This track provides a platform for students to explore and develop their artistic talents while gaining a comprehensive understanding of the principles and techniques within the realm of arts and design.

What is the Best Track in Senior High School?

Now that you have an overview of the senior high school tracks, you might wonder what the best track among these is. Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Why? Determining the best track in senior high school is subjective and depends on individual interests, skill sets, higher education plans, and career goals. Each track is designed to cater to different preferences and aspirations, providing students with diverse opportunities for growth and development.

However, the best track is one that allows you to grow, develop essential skills, and pursue a path that matches your personal goals and aspirations. Selecting the right track sets the foundation for a successful academic journey and, subsequently, a fulfilling career.

How to Choose the Best Track for Senior High School

Choosing the best track for senior high school is a significant decision that requires careful consideration of various factors. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate this crucial choice:

1. Assess yourself.

Begin by reflecting on your interests, strengths, and passion. Consider the subjects you enjoy the most and the activities that bring you satisfaction. Identifying your personal preferences can guide you toward a track that aligns with your intrinsic motivations.

2. Conduct career exploration.

Research potential careers and industries that appeal to you. Know the educational requirements for those careers and determine which tracks are most relevant. You might also want to take personality tests to help you find the track and strand that suits you best.

3. Identify your academic inclinations.

Evaluate your academic strengths and preferences. If you excel in subjects like mathematics and science, then the STEM track might be a good fit. Alternatively, if you have a strong affinity for the arts and humanities, then the arts and design or the HUMSS track may be more suitable.

4. Consider long-term goals.

Think about your long-term educational and career goals. If you plan to pursue a specific course or profession in college, choose a track that aligns with the prerequisites for that field. Some higher education programs may require specific SHS tracks for admission.

5. Look for the best school that offers your chosen track and strand.

Once you’ve determined the track that best suits your interests and goals, it’s also important to find the best school that offers that particular track and strand. Most schools have embraced the K-12 program, providing a variety of tracks to cater to diverse student needs. However, you should enroll in a school that delivers top-notch education. They can equip you with the right skills and knowledge to help you reach your dreams faster!

Top 10 Tips To Stay Focused During Online Class https://www.ciit.edu.ph/top-10-tips-to-stay-focused-during-online-class/ Fri, 30 Jul 2021 13:47:51 +0000 https://www.ciit.edu.ph/?p=27452 Since the onset of the pandemic, students have had to pivot to learning online. Online or distance learning might have been the norm for more than a year, but it still has its challenges. Studying at home poses a lot of distractions, and it can be demotivating to be away from your friends at school.

Let’s face it. Staring at a screen all day is not easy, but it doesn’t always have to be so hard. You can make some changes to make the experience more enjoyable, and maximize learning at the same time. Here are some online class tips to help you stay focused:

1. Maintain a routine

Maintaining a routine can help with your online classes

Set a time for you to wake up, have breakfast, and start your schoolwork. Establishing a routine provides some structure, and helps give you some sense of control. Even if you don’t have to be in a classroom physically from 9 to 5, you can still allocate a set time that’s exclusively for studying.

2. Get dressed for school

The clothes you wear can impact your study performance and productivity. When you’re dressed in your pajamas or workout clothes, you don’t really feel like you’re studying. Dressing up helps you set clear boundaries between school and home life. You can easily change your outfit once you’re done, so you can ‘turn off’ from studying.

3. Have a dedicated study space

Having a dedicated space can help with your online classes

Set up a nook in your house for you to study. It should be away from your television, game console, or bed, so you’re not easily distracted. When you’re in that special study area, make sure you only perform school-related tasks. This is another way for you to establish boundaries at home.

4. Take down some notes

Writing down notes during class is a good habit to adopt for you to learn, and stay engaged during your study time. It will give you something to do with your hands, and it helps you remember your lessons better. It also gives you some semblance of traditional learning in a classroom as well.

5. Avoid social media during study hours

Avoiding social media while studying is a good online schooling tip

It can be tempting to go on Instagram or Twitter instead of reviewing your notes. That’s why you should avoid social media when it’s time for you to study. There are mobile apps that help people regulate their social media usage. You can also turn off notifications when it’s time for you to focus on schoolwork.

6. Wear headphones

If you can invest in noise-canceling headphones, you should. They help you zero in on your classes, and steer clear from distractions. This way, you can focus on your online class. When you’re doing homework or reviewing your notes, you can try listening to relaxing or classical music to help you get in the zone.

7. Take a break

A good online class tip is to take breaks

While this may sound counterproductive, this actually helps you stay focused. It can be boring to study for hours without end. When you catch yourself slipping, take short breaks to get back in the game. You can go outside and get some air, or do some exercises. This way, you’ll be motivated to study again.

8. Stay hydrated

There is a link between water and cognitive performance. Basically, it’s hard to stay focused when you’re thirsty. Having some water or refreshments in your study nook or area will keep the thirst at bay. By doing this, you don’t have to leave your dedicated space every so often, and get tempted to do something else.

9. Fuel yourself with some snacks

Eat snacks to help with studying

It can be challenging to stay focused on an empty stomach. That’s why you should have healthy snacks with you while studying. Steer clear from junk food that may cause you to crash, and try loading up on delicious yet nutritious food like almonds, dark chocolate, and fruit salad.

10. Get enough sleep

One reason why you have a hard time concentrating is that you don’t get enough sleep. While it’s ideal to set goals and get good grades, you shouldn’t sacrifice sleep. Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule. Having a good night’s sleep will improve your mood, boost your performance, and even refine your memory.

These are some of the habits you can adopt to improve your distancing learning experience. To help students pivot to the online learning system, we at CIIT Philippines developed CIIT Move or  CIIT Modern Virtual Education.
CIIT Move encourages students to pursue their learning despite the challenges of studying in the online space. Through this modern virtual setup, students and teachers will never have a hard time accessing their online courses. Visit our website to know more about CIIT Move.

Tips on How to Solve the Common Problems of Online Students

Happy female student in an online learning setupDespite the perks, online learning still poses challenges for both students and teachers. Here are some tips on how to overcome these roadblocks.

1. Find an online study group.

An online study group can help you learn new study skills, fill in learning gaps, and break the boredom of studying alone. If you’re current online class still doesn’t have a study group, reach out and see if anyone is interested to join you. Google Meet, Skype, and Zoom are some of the great apps to help you create your virtual group.

2. Stay motivated to complete your homework.

Push yourself to finish all worksheets and homework by setting SMART goals for each class. Print a blank transcript and write in your classes and desired grade based upon your goals. Tape it where you can see it directly. You can also write uplifting quotes on post-it notes and place them on your study table or bathroom mirror.

3. Learn and master the topics easier.

Avoid procrastination and over learning using the Chunking and Pomodoro methods. Aside from the given perks, the first one also prevents straining your short-term memory by breaking down large concepts and tackling them one at a time. The latter method works by rewarding yourself with a 30-minute break after completing 4 sessions comprised of 25 minutes of work and 5 minutes of break.

4. Monitor the time spent on every task.

Create a to-do list and prioritize the items on your list. Start working on the larger assignments first since you might need to complete several smaller tasks in order to finish. Also try to divide the work into daily tasks together with smaller, one-off assignments.

5. Take notes and study for online exams.

Absorbing all information during online lectures and videos can be quite overwhelming. Taking notes can solve this problem and help you study for online exams. Using Cornell notes, concept mapping, Venn diagrams, or bulleted notes are some of the ways to take effective notes.

6. Create (and adhere to) a new routine.

If your current routine is not working and making it hard for you to keep your focus, maybe it’s time to create a new one. Establish a new routine by scheduling study time, worksheet time, and time for yourself. Take note, however, that it will take time before you can fully adapt. Try meditating and other exercises to train your brain and attention span.

Online learning would likely stay as long as this pandemic is not over. Getting the needed resources for this setup may be tough; but for now, it is the safest way for both teachers and the students.

CIIT now accepts enrollees for college, senior high school, and specialist courses through our online enrollment page.

Before the Entrance Exam

3. Plan your review strategy.

There are various ways to study each lesson. Know your type of learning style for it will help you grasp your lessons faster.

4. Use relevant books only.

The innumerable number of books you had since Grade 1 is overwhelming. Reviewing all of them will only consume your time and energy. Focus on more recent books but don’t forget to browse your old notes.

5. Don’t memorize—internalize.

Memorization is not the best way to pass an exam; details will only vanish in no time. Thus, understand what you are reviewing.

6. Answer previous year test papers.

There’s a great chance that previous questions from reviewers and tests will appear on your exam. So, don’t forget to practice answering them within a time limit.

7. Be creative with your review strategy.

Use mnemonics, flashcards, and learn all the shortcuts to better understand and memorize the lessons. Maximize cutouts, photos, and videos on your review.

8. Eat healthy to think healthy.

Keep yourself healthy. Eat fruits and vegetables and avoid junk foods. Bad eating habits make people less smart.

9. Practice and practice a lot more.

70% of the preparation is practicing. After reading and taking notes, try to answer test papers over and over again. Having a group study session with your friends is a great idea, too!

10. Condition yourself for the upcoming entrance exam.

It’s vital that your mind is more than ready for the exam. So, months before the exam, tell yourself, “You will ace the exam!” every single day.

During the Entrance Exam

1. Relax; inhale, exhale.

Don’t panic and try not to review your notes 10 minutes before the exam. Doing this will only worsen your state of focus.

2. Use the method of elimination and make educated guesses.

If you can’t remember the answer, eliminate the least possible options and choose the most probable answer.

3. Read the questions cautiously.

Don’t jump into answering the item if you’ve only read the first 3 words. Remember; read the questions twice, if possible.

4. Manage time wisely.

This is a common tip but it is one of the most effective ways to pass the exam. Wear your wristwatch and be cautious of the time.

K-12 Program: Preparing Senior High School Graduates for the Workplace https://www.ciit.edu.ph/senior-high-school-graduates/ https://www.ciit.edu.ph/senior-high-school-graduates/#respond Wed, 29 Apr 2020 19:41:41 +0000 https://www.ciit.edu.ph/?p=11481 Congratulations on graduating from Senior High School (SHS)! You’re now a step closer to your dreams! And as expected of the new K-12 program, senior high school graduates like you can now apply for jobs right after receiving your SHS diploma. However, if you want to progress to higher education, you can also choose to pursue your chosen track and enroll in a college degree program. Not sure which path to take between the two? We’re here to help you! Here’s everything you need to know about the K-12 program and tips to help you plan your next step.

The K-12 Program

The Department of Education (DepEd) claims to produce job-ready SHS graduates under the K-12 program. The new curriculum prepares them to become skilled and job-market ready, which most firms are looking for. Basically, the K-12 program in the Philippines is aimed to shape the youth for employment, skills development, and higher education after graduating from SHS.

Since the country’s shift from the old high school curriculum to the new K-12 program, confusion coming from both parents and high school students emerged.  Here is the breakdown of the differences between the old curriculum and the new K-12.

Old High School Curriculum

  • 10 -year basic education curriculum
  • Most graduates are younger than 18 and are not legally ready to get a job or start a business yet
  • Kindergarten is optional and not a prerequisite to Grade 1 admission.
  • Broad curriculum, which lacks practical applications.

New K-12 Curriculum

  • 12-year program which gives students enough time to master skills
  • Most graduates are aged 18 and above and are already legal for employment
  • Kindergarten is mandatory for five-year-old children and is a requirement to be admitted to Grade 1.
  • Gives students the chance to choose among three tracks (Academic; Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; Sports; and Arts and Design)
  • Students must undergo immersion, exposing them to relevant experiences and skills needed in their chosen track

What Senior High School Graduates Can Expect in College

Many SHS graduates who want to pursue their college degree may expect to become bombarded with loads of schoolwork. That is true, to an extent. Fortunately, the K-12 program has already prepared you for the challenges that you might encounter once you step up to college. In fact, the subjects you’ve taken in SHS are prerequisites to the degree you want to pursue. Meaning, you already have the basics down—the knowledge and skills for an easier transition to your chosen degree. In general, you may expect to deal with several readings, more (surprise) tests, and greater responsibilities when it comes to school. Of course, these are all needed to hone your potential even more.

What Senior High School Graduates Can Expect in the Workplace

If you do, however, choose to become part of the workforce after getting your SHS diploma, you have a wide range of career options to choose from. These said, the BPO, manufacturing, professional services, retail, and machinery and equipment sectors are open to hiring K-12 graduates. According to Indeed.com’s job list, the most in demand careers for K-12 graduates are:

  • Sales Associate
  • Financial Advisor
  • Teacher
  • Non-Voice Representative
  • Receptionist
  • Online English Teacher
  • Call Center Agent
  • Customer Service Representative
  • Sales Clerk

Further, the K-12 program provides emotional preparedness among students to take on the challenges of the professional workplace. With their visible practical work experience, values, and work ethics; they’re ready to take on any task and join the workforce.

CIIT’s Career Ladder Program: Your Key to a Smooth Transition to College

The ICT strand of CIIT’s senior high school program further leads students who took the Arts and Design or Tech Voc tracks to college courses they can pursue. It has made a smooth shift for senior high school students who likewise want to earn a degree. In the same way, its tracks equip learners with the skills needed by most industries.

As a senior high school graduate, is it best for you to face the challenges of joining the workforce? Or do you wish to continue your chosen track to college? Chances are you’re still confused on what to do. However, you need not rush your choices. Instead, focus on improving your skills and weighing whether you’ll take on the road ahead of you. The New K to 12 Curriculum Grading System https://www.ciit.edu.ph/k-to-12-grading-system/ https://www.ciit.edu.ph/k-to-12-grading-system/#respond Thu, 02 Apr 2020 07:00:32 +0000 http://www.staging2.ciit.edu.ph/?post_type=blog&p=4384 Though it has been years since the educational reform in 2012, we can still deem the k to 12 curriculum fairly new and subject for a full review. For newly applied systems like this, full grasp of the new grading and assessment process is vital to achieve transparency. To know how your teachers compute your final grades, here’s a guide for the new k to 12 grading system for senior high school students like you.

All about the New K to 12 Grading System

Under D.O. No. 8, s.2015 effective school year 2015-2016, the Department of Education or DepEd will follow a new competency based grading system for K-12 Basic Education Program. Compared to the former Knowledge, Process, Understanding, and Performances or KPUP grading system, the latest will use fewer grading system components and a new transmutation table.

All public schools from kindergarten to senior high school must comply. Although not required, DepEd urges private schools to follow same guidelines. Non-DepEd schools, on the other hand, can adjust their policies in line to their mission and vision but with the approval of the DepEd Regional Office.

Under this order, all the Written Works, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment or WW-PT-QA scores of students from Grades 1 to 12 will be the base of their summative assessment results. These three have specific percentage weights that vary based on the nature of the learning area.

New Senior High School Grading System Components

    • Written Work (WW) – makes sure students can express skills and contents in written form
    • Performance Tasks (PT) – lets learners show what they know and can do in diverse ways
    • Quarterly Assessment (QA) – measures student learning at the end of the quarter

How to Record and Compute Your Grades Based on K to 12 Grading System

Every grading period, the students must complete one quarterly assessment and several written works and performance tasks. There’s no required number of WW and PT but these must be spread out over the quarter and used to assess students’ skills after each unit has been taught.

How to Compute Your Final Grade and General Average

Follow the steps below to compute your final grades.

  1. Add up all the total score for each component.
  2. Convert the sum for each component to percentage score. Divide the total raw score by the highest possible score, then multiply the quotient by 100%.
  3. Convert the percentage scores to weighted scores. Multiply the PS by the weight of the component listed in Table 1.

Table 1. Weight of Components for SHS

  1. Sum up the weighted scores of each component to get the initial grade.
  2. Transmute the initial grade to get the quarterly grade using the new transmutation table.

How to Compute Your Grades at the End of the School Year

For grades 11 and 12, the two quarters will dictate your final grade in a semester. Your teacher will show your parent or guardian the summary of your progress quarterly via parent-teacher meetings. The grading scale, with descriptor and remarks, are given at the end of your grade level.

What Are the Perks of the New K to 12 Grading System

Unlike the KPUP, the new k to 12 grading system has 60 as minimum grade but will have a converted rating of 75 in the report card. The lowest grade a student can get is rather 60 for the quarterly and final grades. Since the new grading system also used fewer components and launched a new transmutation table, it makes it simpler for teachers to compute the grades.
